NB&B was one of the very first departments to combine the study of animal behavior with its neural basis, based on the belief that the interface between them was one of great research potential. The interests of our faculty and students span all levels of organization, from single neurons to complex circuits to whole organisms and societies thereof.


Position Summary:

The technician will provide technical support in a lab working at the intersection of animal behavior, evolution, genomics and neuroscience. Duties will primarily focus on molecular biology including but not limited to generation of plasmids to be used in viral vectors, preparation of next generation sequencing libraries, and the extraction of nucleic acids from samples. The additional work may include the generation and analysis of behavioral data, field and lab work, generation of imaging data in addition to maintenance of equipment and space in the lab. The person in this position will also assist the principal investigator and lab researchers in husbandry of research animals and provide supervision of work-study and honors undergraduate workers. This position will involve handling live paper wasps.


This is a full-time (40 hours per week) 12-month appointment with the possibility of extension contingent on successful performance and continued funding.

Required Qualifications:

High school Diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination. Working knowledge of undergraduate genetics, biology and statistics. Familiar with basic molecular genetic lab techniques. Comfortable working with Visual concentration and manual dexterity are required. Must be personable, flexible, possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in their work. Ability to work effectively with hazardous chemicals and biohazards; be familiar with and follow safety protocol and procedures at all times. Must have valid driver’s license and be able to occasionally work irregular hours. Strong computer knowledge required. Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Specific experience with data collection and statistical analysis. Ability to lift 20-50 pounds. Demonstrated ability to multitask and balance priorities when necessary. Must be able to carry out experiments to completion with moderate guidance. Strong attention to detail.


Preferred Qualifications:

Associate’s degree or other formal training program of two years or equivalent in biology, chemistry or related field. More than 1 and less than 2 years’ experience. Previous experience extraction of DNA and RNA and other wet-lab skills. Knowledge of PCR, cloning, and running of gels. HTML (web site) skills, good organizational skills, and punctuality are highly desirable. Mastered data entry skills.
